New Delhi: The upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 in the city may become a cause of worry for several Delhi University (DU) students as they have been asked to vacate their hostel accommodations by the end of this month.
Six DU colleges have asked students putting up in the hostels to vacate their rooms for a period of three months so that the hostels can be renovated to make them suitable for accommodating players during the Games.
The move by the colleges has left almost 2000 students trying to seek lodgings in other places before the new academic session begins in July. Due to the large number of students being ousted temporarily from their hostels, finding a lodging place might turn out to be problematic for these students.
The government will be providing the grants for the renovation of these hostels. Colleges have yielded to the renovation offers as this is the first time that the government is offering funds to colleges to upgrade their hostels.
All colleges on the campus would be the venues for rugby tournaments during the Commonwealth Games. The government would be providing grants ranging from Rs. 40 lakh to Rs. 1 crore for improvement of thehostels.
Principals of colleges that have asked students to vacate the hostels have said that students would have to find lodgings for only three months, after which they would be allowed to come back to better and improved accommodations.
